Lonely Empty Box a Free Verse Poem by Jennifer Jo Fay

Lonely Empty Box

Once upon a time there was a little girl
who wandered into the forest, finding
an old, wooden box.  Yet, pristine and new
to her.  Her baby blue eyes lit brightened

and she thought about things to create her
magical box.  Yet, as she looked at it,
she cried as she possessed sheer loneliness.
She had nothing to give to the precious

box.  Not even a crayon to color on hearts.
Homelessness held her captive, no parents
to share in happiness, that she so craved.
No love to hold and seal inside.

She sat down on a broken tree and searched
for silent words and wishes, containing thoughts
that were hers.  And suddenly a swollen
tear dripped inside the box.  And emptiness

swallowed the warmth from her soul.  Somehow knowing
that she would be able to hold onto
a far away dream, that could truly be hers.
